Magnetar

Information Technology Intern

June - July 2024 • Evanston, IL

What I liked

Magnetar was a great company to intern at. The program is made specifically to help students gain experience on real world problems. The internship included lots of benefits as well, such as many fun events, and free lunches.

What I wish was different

I wish the program was a bit longer. The internship only lasts 7 weeks, which is on the shorter side of internship programs. It is a good program, but I would prefer that it was at least 10 weeks.

Advice

Get as much done as you can. The way to make the most out of this program is completing as many projects as you can. Each assignment had different problems, and varying solutions which provided me with a plenty of new scenarios to learn from.

Alternative Credit & Fixed Income Intern

June - July 2022 • Evanston, IL

What I liked

I enjoyed working with small groups of other interns on a rotational basis to get exposure to a variety of Mangetar's business segments. I also really enjoyed how approachable and helpful the full-time employees were with all the interns. I was paired with an employee as my mentor and he gave great advice and made time for any questions I might've had.

What I wish was different

Advice

Get comfortable being uncomfortable. A lot of what you learn during the summer is brand new information that you might not know anything about. Get out of your shell, and don't be afraid to ask questions or ask for help. Try to get to know as many of your fellow interns as you can and try to make a goal of talking and looking for advice from the experienced professionals at Magnetar as their advice/connections/knowledge are all invaluable for a college student looking to break into the financial services industry.

Alternative Credit & Fixed Income Intern

June - July 2022 • Evanston, IL

What I liked

Magnetar's ACFI program is designed to help interns as much as possible. Each project was headed by investment professionals at the firm who are readily available to interns at any moment during the day. Individual mentors are assigned to each intern to answer any questions about projects, careers, or applications. Any employee will go out of their way to help, or just get to know you. I could not imagine building such a strong network with such successful and motivated people in one summer anywhere else.

What I wish was different

Advice

Get involved early. The interns who learned the most and made the best relationships with employees were those who were reaching out with questions, asking for advice, or just looking to get coffee in the first week. Not one of my internal Magnetar emails were left unanswered, and I strongly encourage anyone applying to this position to reach out to employees now.
