Madison Square Garden

Cashier

November 2021 - September 2022 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Very cool atmosphere, lots of interesting history. Discounts on a ton of stuff including parking across the street, restaurants around the city, access to (limited) free tickets to games (rangers&knicks) and you experience great shows, see some legends.

What I wish was different

Lack of proper management all across the board, no clear delegated responsibilities, issues are passed from person to person across every department. They also have a ton of restrictions/rules (obviously dependent on your job position) that make it very difficult to do your job. There has also been a case of them hiring a convicted sex offender straight out of prison (violent rape of a 9 year old). This person should not have (legally) been working at a space where kids could be present. He ended being reported to HR by a female colleague for verbally assaulting her, and was then fired. My boss, speaking about the incident claimed “sometimes they slip through the cracks”. The truth is they have a very high turnover rate, as most positions are seasonal (because of the nature of the sport and entertainment industry) and they require very specific scheduling - they lose people often and they have to hire people every season, especially after Covid they were desperate and clearly have a habit of hiring people without thorough background checks.

Advice

Make sure you are very clear with your expectations from your role up front. Pay close attention to the rules made clear during orientation (they also require NDAS) and make sure you’re aware of who is in charge.

Student Recruiter

June - August 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I really enjoyed how much responsibility MSG gave me. I was able to go through the full-cycle recruiting process on my own with my own job requisitions. I also greatly appreciated how kind and approachable all of the full-time employees were when I asked to meet or for career advice.

Social Impact and Fan Engagement Student Associate

June - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Professional development workshops, networking opportunities, important and relevant tasks, and the opportunity to create a creative assignment project with other interns.

What I wish was different

I wish my experience could have been in-person rather than virtual, but that was obviously out of everyone’s control.

Advice

Take advantage of learning from people all over the company and make connections with peers in the program!

Sales Enablement

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I thoroughly enjoyed meeting new people and professionals. I sometimes didn't know what to expect on a daily basis, but that was a blessing in disguise because it forced me to become much more adaptable than I was. The people at MSG were uber-welcoming and helped me whenever I had a question, request or idea. This wasn't a total surprise, but it made any nerves I had about my role disappear. I walked away from MSG with a greater sense of what it will take to make a career for myself in that specific industry. That was my end goal, and it was achieved.

What I wish was different

There were a couple times where my supervisors simply didn't have much work for me to do. This wasn't anyone's fault, but there were moments where I felt like I could've done more for the company even in such a small, temporary role.

Advice

Do not hesitate to ask questions and always be a sponge. Also, try to meet new people that are outside your department. It can only benefit you.
