MACIAS PR

Public Relations Intern

June - August 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I worked directly with the PR firm's founder, Mark, on most of the tasks, and I was able to gain direct experience on how to work on blog posts, pitches, press releases, and do media research. Sometimes, you get to join client calls. Mark makes you do most of the tasks and throws you in that real-world PR agency setting right from the first day. More than being a supervisor, he was really more of a mentor and I appreciate that he made sure we were gaining valuable experience.

What I wish was different

I really wished it was an in-person internship, but due to the pandemic, it was fully remote.

Advice

Learn how to think critically and ask yourself first before relying on Mark for help. The internship will teach you how to work and think independently as a real job requires.

Journalism Intern

June - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

By far the best internship I have ever been a part of! Mark knows what he's doing and brings interns in for everything he can. He really relies a lot on his interns, so by the end, you have real experience.

What I wish was different

I did my internship in quarantine so one thing I wish could have been different is that we could have been in an office environment.

Advice

As long as it's still an online internship, time management and staying on top of Mark giving you assignments is crucial.

Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

It was very hands-on. He depends a lot on interns so you’re thrown right into working on PR campaigns from the first day you’re there.

What I wish was different

Advice

You need to be willing to speak up. Share your ideas and opinions. If you have an idea for a story or social media campaign, or literally anything, feel free to open up about it and let him know. You’re basically doing everything a full-time employee would be doing so your input is beyond valuable!

Marketing Intern

May - July 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked how I had the opportunity to work directly with the founder, Mark Macias on different media campaigns. I learned how to write pitches and press releases and even had an infographic published on PCMag.

What I wish was different

Due to COVID, the internship was entirely remote so I wish I could have experience of traveling into Manhattan to work in the office. However, Mark, the other interns and I made the best out of it with daily Zoom meetings and phone calls.

Advice

I would recommend this internship to anyone remotely interested in the public relations industry. The hands-on experience and advice Mark gave us was something that you do not learn in a classroom setting. I will take the lessons I learned with me to my future job opportunities.

PR Intern

May - July 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

This internship is very hands-on since interns are given plenty of responsibility and impactful assignments. I loved always being busy and how my ideas and opinions were valued. There were so many opportunities to improve my writing, my communication skills, and my analytical thinking. Right away I was pitching to reporters, writing press releases, and ghostwriting editorials so I immediately started learning.

What I wish was different

Since I interned during the pandemic we were all working remotely so I really missed the collaborative teamwork environment. I would have liked working in the office to get to know everyone better and have people right next to me to ask questions and brainstorm with.

Advice

Mark really values the ideas and opinions of the interns so always give your honest thoughts instead of what you think he wants to hear. Don’t be afraid to ask questions since it’s better than being unsure and doing an assignment the wrong way and having to redo it.

Marketing/PR Intern

January - May 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Interning at MACIAS PR allows you to heavily grow and develop your skills in PR and marketing. You also work closely with the CEO which allowed me to learn multiple successful business strategies. As an intern, you work hard on multiple projects and writing assignments that directly impact the company and clients. While at times it may be difficult, you directly impact the company with your accomplishments and it is a great learning experience that teaches you to push your limits as an intern.

What I wish was different

I wouldn't change anything! It may be difficult for some interns at the beginning but I had a great experience and learned a tremendous amount in the business world.

Advice

This internship is about becoming a better intern and learning what it takes to be successful in this industry. You will take criticism about your work but it is always about helping you improve. One of the best benefits of this internship.

Intern

January - May 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

This is the best Internship for someone who is truly interested in a Public Relations career. Mark provides a hands on environment that gives interns the proper experience needed to succeed in PR. From the very beginning, Mark asks interns what they think about a pitch or press release. Do not be afraid to speak your mind because your ideas that go unsaid could be the key to success. It’s very unfortunate that because of COVID-19 we were unable to come to the office because I miss the environment. If you want to really learn what PR is all about then this is the internship that will propel you to the next level. I now feel prepared for the big dogs in the PR world all thanks to the teachings and guidance of Mark Macias. Mark is very friendly and easy to talk to. I’m very happy to know him and for the invaluable experience. Not to mention he takes you out to lunch every time you’re there and its always good stuff.

What I wish was different

Nothing!

Advice

As long as you are open to criticism you will be just fine.

PR & Marketing Intern

January - April 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

In a small company like Macias PR, every intern counts. I liked how every day, our office of 4-6 people would start the day with a little catch-up and end it with the daily reflections. Throughout the day, we would discuss work-related questions as a group, and during lunch, you could ask Mark Macias about anything. He'd love to give you his insights on a career path, college experience, and even provide resume feedback.

What I wish was different

A few times, I've felt like I've lost my time working on things that were supposed to be done differently. In those times, I wish I was given more specific tasks and guidance in case there is a way that I, as an intern, am not aware of.

Advice

The most important lesson I've learned working with Mark is that whether you're an intern or a full-time employee, you are there to make your boss's job easier - otherwise, you are not an asset for a company. Be ready for some self-teaching, if this is your first internship like it was for me, but be sure that your hard work will be repaid by preparing you for the real business world.

Public Relations Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Everything was all hands on deck, as far as experiences go, but that's typical of any startup style company. Mark (owner and boss of the firm) tried not to throw us into the deep end from the get go, but by the second day we were already working on writing pitches or researching reporters. It was a pretty intense but rewarding experience, in my opinion, but it taught me a lot about both practical marketing and practical PR. My favorite part about the internship, though, was getting to work with him on his play---"The King - The Final Hours". We interns were even credited as assistant producers its website!

What I wish was different

This is probably not on-topic, but I wish we varied where we got lunch from a little more. I remember getting lunch from the same place for a week straight, and alternating between that place and a different one another week. Aside from that, I think that it was a good experience overall.

Advice

He tries not to throw you into the deep end, but if this will be your first time interning or first time doing the practical work for PR, it's going to feel like the deep end. So, be ready.
