Camp Counselor

May - August 2018 • Coeur d'Alene, ID

What I liked

I liked being able to work with kids this summer and the community built within the staff. Working at a summer camp is different from another job because you don’t just go home at the end of the night. You’re there 95% of the time. But it’s a lot of fun that balances the hard work.

What I wish was different

I wish that the Program Team had heard more of my requests for the age groups you counsel. I felt like I rarely received the age groups I was most comfortable with. However, you sign up to be a servant leader when choosing to be a counselor, so it comes with the job.

Advice

Working as a counselor is hard. There’s no way around it. However, if you focus on the little moments, the happy ones, when the chaos of camp is perfect, when you feel that you’ve impacted a camper, then all the hard work pays off. You have to focus on the bigger picture and you definitely have to rely on God for strength throughout the summer.

Special Programs Director

May - August 2018 • Coeur d'Alene, ID

What I liked

In my role at Lutherhaven I was able to take ownership over the programs I was in charge of and bring my creativity and skills to them. I was mentored throughout the process and worked as a part of a team to facilitate all summer camp programming. This was an invaluable experience as I was able to not only coordinate volunteers, staff, and necessary resources, but also felt supported throughout the entire process. The directors at Lutherhaven truly care about their staff and want to help them succeed during the summer and in future endeavors. All staff receive extensive training that prepares them not only for their role during the summer, but for future careers. Through my three summers on staff at Lutherhaven, I have become more professional, self-aware, and effective. Lutherhaven is not only a job, but a loving community that employees become life-long members of.

What I wish was different

I would not change anything about my experience.

Advice

Lutherhaven is a service-oriented organization and employees need to be capable of a service-oriented mindset in order to be successful.
