Los Angeles Unified School District

High School Teacher

September 2000 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I had many opportunities to try different roles as a teacher. I enjoyed the time I was able to attend many workshops and professional development for science and that I was able to attend the National Science Teacher Association and California Science Teacher Association conferences. I'm happy that once I graduate from WGU's nursing program, I can work in the District's Nursing Department without a cut in pay and I continue with my benefits, so I don't need to start at the bottom, I remain at the top of the pay scale.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time with my family. Teaching is not for single parents. I wish I had known how much work is put into teaching.

Advice

Always make your family a priority. Don't overextend yourself and learn to say "NO". As much as you may love the students, you only have them for 9 months and most you will never see again. Work will always be there, try not to take it home.

Substitute Teacher’s Aide

What I liked

I love working with children. There is a diversified amount of people I was able to meet from children to adults.

What I wish was different

I wish that some schools I worked at had a better work culture.

Advice

Working with children is fun if you genuinely like to work with them. You can’t come to work and pretend to enjoy your job, you have to actually enjoy what you do.
