Intern

June - August 2021 • Chatsworth, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed helping litigants with their family law cases and learning more about the law.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the opportunity to meet more of the interns and staff attorneys in person across the different courthouses, but I really enjoyed the interactions we had virtually!

Advice

Ask lots of questions and put yourself up there to get to know your fellow interns! Remember that you have the power to empower others and put your best foot forward every day, but also take care of yourself.

Judicial Intern

June - August 2019 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

In addition to learning about Court procedures, I enjoyed gaining introductory knowledge of case law, code sections, procedures in the Court Clerk Manual, and other specialized written material. In this position, my assignments were in various litigation areas such as Criminal, Civil, Family Law, Probate, and Juvenile. Therefore, I was responsible for reviewing case records; researching legal issues for any of the Judicial Officers; performing administrative duties such as filing, copying staff receptionist's desk; attending trials, hearings, and depositions, etc.

What I wish was different

I wish I came into this internship with a richer understanding of legal terminology and the technical language of the legal profession. Not having a substantial understanding of legal terminology started off as a challenging experience, given that I interacted closely with a Judicial Officer, Attorney’s, and Probation officers who all had an advanced understanding legal terminology.

Advice

Reflecting upon my position as a Judicial Operations Intern, I would advice others who have an interest in interning in the legal profession is to maximize the time spent with Judicial Officers by identifying and communicating your professional development needs; thus, allowing the Judicial Officers to provide fair and constructive feedback towards your learning process of judicial decision-making and the practice of law. For example, applying and improving your skills, including legal analysis, research, writing, and oral communication.
