Communicate as much as you can with the ones that you hired in order to identify what you need to know or learn beforehand to be successful. Be very communicative and open to networking not just with other engineers, but other Student Engineers also, good luck.

Student Engineer

What I liked
The DWP emphasizes mentorship of student engineers, and I felt welcomed, respected, and motivated to work and learn. They also provide excellent real-world examples that turns theory into tangible experiences. I liked working with diverse teams (both engineers and non-engineers) on real department projects, and visiting field work yards, construction sites, recieving stations, aqueducts, and more.
What I wish was different
Time moves quick in the summer, and there is a lot to learn/do. Learning to manage your projects becomes an important part of this internship.
Advice
For students, the interview emphasizes behavioral questions and experience -- if you've been involved in engineering clubs or volunteer work, it shows you are passionate about your education and that you work great with others.

Civil Engineering Intern

What I liked
The work assigned was actual engineering work that immediately effected the city. I learned a lot in a short period of time and saw the impact the decisions I made as an intern.
What I wish was different
It would be great if there was more opportunities for socials within the summer cohorts outside of the program field trips.
Advice
Don’t be afraid to ask questions about different departments within LADWP that you might be interested in and uses the resources provided to you through the program
