A lot of people don't follow through with an interview or job because it isn't for them. It isn't forever give yourself some experience and something you enjoy will fall in your lap.

What I liked

I really enjoyed how often I was able to work. I worked every weekday from 9:30-6:30 everyday, so I was really able to save a lot this summer. I enjoyed getting to expand my network of connections through this family I was employed by!

What I wish was different

The communication between the parents and me was often not good. The parents did not do a good job of communicating with one another or with their children, so I often felt in the middle of everyone.

Advice

I would tell them to set ground rules with the girls from the beginning. I would have a set routine with the kids as well as the parents so communication wouldn't be as big of a problem. I would also set boundaries because often I would get asked the day of if I could stay until 10:30pm so those were long days.

What I liked

I loved the freedom I had to make decisions about what we would do each day. I was able to spend a lot of time outside and at fun places around Eau Claire.

What I wish was different

Sometimes I wish the schedule was more concrete. Anytime there is a job with a family, schedules are subject to change with work hours, appointments, activities, etc.

Advice

If you are majoring in anything related to education, I suggest trying to nanny for a summer. It obviously provides experience with kids, but nannying offers more than just babysitting. As a nanny you have to create daily plans. You practice organization, routines, schedules but also impulsivity accommodation and spontaneity. All of which are aspects of teaching.
