Loaves and Fishes

Pantry Coordinator

May - June 2020 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

I liked giving food to the needy, everyone working towards the same goal trying to be participatory in growing not only the organization, but their process. Becoming for efficient was a steadfast goal, everything was constantly changing to produce better outcomes in helping members and staff. Also the endless amounts of gifts was an incentive when working, but everyone was always supportive and worked to improve. It was not just an obligatory job, but a mission with purpose.

What I wish was different

I wished I was able to choose what position I had for that day. Even though for some people there it was considered a job I always saw it as a way to reform and develop the community we assisted with never just a position. As a pantry coordinator you had to deal with client troubles and speak with Spanish speakers. I for one am not a Spanish speaker, but just that aspect was difficult to overcome, especially when there wasn't a Spanish speaker present.

Advice

Get the most out of this experience because you don't always work with people who have the same goals and want to actually better the community so learn and retain as much as you can with this opportunity given.

Medical assistant

What I liked

I enjoyed helping people and offering free care at the clinic. For most of the patients, they hadn't seen a doctor in years so to be able to check their vital signs, glucose levels, and perform blood tests felt amazing. Just to be able to give back to our community and inform them of their current health at no charge.
