What I liked

The sales & marketing internship with LMCG Investments offers a great opportunity for Bates students who are interested in a career in finance, but who do not have an extensive finance background/experience. In the sales & marketing role, you will assist the marketing associates in preparing RFP's and DDQ's, as well as updating the firms financial records/data. While these responsibilities may seem mundane at first, they provide you a chance to learn first-hand about what a financial services firm actually does. By working with databases of information, you will naturally learn more about finance through this internship.

What I wish was different

Due to the slower pace of financial markets during the summer months, there were often days where I would not have a whole lot to do. I would have preferred that I had more responsibilities and tasks to do throughout my time there, and I would encourage future interns to not be afraid to ask other employees of the firm for more work.

Advice

Take advantage of the small size of the firm (around 60 employees or so) and the excellent group of people that work at LMCG. The CEO is a Bates grad from '82 and is an incredible person to learn from. If you have the chance, take the time to network with the other people at the firm and ask them questions. This is how I not only got to know them, but it is also how I got to know more about finance.
