Lindsay & Brownell, LLP

Tax Intern

January - April 2022 • La Jolla, CA

What I liked

This internship experience was extremely helpful in getting a good representation of what a profession in accounting is like. Each person that I worked with was accommodating if I needed help and was always open to answering questions. The environment in the office was very comfortable and made me want to come to work everyday. For example, the staff hosted lunches every few weeks which was a time to socialize with everyone in the office and eat good food! Overall, I learned so much about tax, what it is like to work in a professional setting, and how to communicate effectively in groups.

Advice

Be prepared to be busy! Working during the tax busy season was challenging because you have to balance academics at the same time. It gets easier over time! The firm is super understanding and flexible so don't hesitate to reach out to them when you need support.

What I liked

Everyone I met at L&B from other interns to staff, managers, and partners were all very welcoming! I feel like I gained a lot of real-world tax experience from this internship since you get treated like staff in terms of the type of work you're assigned. I would highly recommend this internship to anyone looking to get experience working in tax, whether it's just to try it out or if it's something you want to do long term.

What I liked

Extremely welcoming and friendly company culture! I immediately felt comfortable with letting people know when I had questions or needed help. In addition, I had the privilege of working completely on-site. This enabled me to get close to my fellow interns and we had a lot of fun together. I learned a TON from this internship and it has definitely made me consider more seriously to pursue tax as a profession.

What I wish was different

Looking back on my internship, there is nothing that I would wish had been different, rather I hope that it continues to be as great and beneficial to future interns as it has been for me.

Advice

I would advise any future intern to make the most of this internship by LEARNING and MAKING MISTAKES. L&B creates a stress and risk free environment for interns to work in and it's better to make mistakes and ask questions freely as an intern than when it actually counts.

What I liked

I loved how friendly everyone was and how willing to help they were. I never felt like I couldn't ask someone a question. Everyone made me feel immediately welcome and the office never lacked a friendly face. L&B recruits certain types of people that make the office feel warm and make you excited to go into work everyday and work alongside them.

Tax Intern

June - August 2017 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I loved the size of the company. Everyone knows everyone, so it is very similar to a family. And much like a family, I never once had a problem with reaching out to someone for help. Everyone was very willing to help you out, and if they were too busy, then they had no problem suggesting someone else to go to for help. The work was very interesting to me as well. The software took some time to get used to, but once I got the hang of that, I learned so much about tax returns in such a short time.

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been more work for me to do, which I expressed to my superiors as well. There were three interns during the summer, which is usually a slow season for tax. Thus, the three of us sometimes ran out of tax returns to do. The other two interns had been there during tax season, though, so they said that there was never a shortage of returns to do over that time period, even with at least six interns.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions, and get to know your coworkers. It can become very easy for you to just immerse yourself in your work and hide away at your desk, but take a lunch break and eat with someone in the café or just don't be afraid to talk to anyone when you see them.

What I liked

Great on-the-job experience. They brought me out to client's office as early as my second week with them. It was definitely a 'family' environment -- everyone knew everyone. They made me feel right at home, and pushed me to learn and grow at the same time.

Soak it all up. It is an awesome experience, and I valued every moment of it. Do not be afraid to ask anyone a question -- from staff all the way to partner.
