What I liked

What I wish was different

Regional management was extremely hostile to our center and my direct supervisors were always stressed and expressing how miserable the job made them (although we all loved working with the kids). Most people left within a few months of being hired--I wish the environment had been friendlier and we were better compensated for the fairly difficult, improvisational nature of one-on-one sessions.

What I liked

It was fun and rewarding to work with kids. They were so goofy but worked so hard! Free lunch on Wednesdays during meetings was always nice and my coworkers were awesome.

What I wish was different

I think the worst thing was that training was 10am-7pm which was pretty late, but that was only for 2 weeks.

Advice

There were times that the kids got pretty dang annoying but it's important to realize where they're coming from! Be patient and creative!

What I liked

Incredible pay, heartwarming experience, consistent hours, valuable teaching.

What I wish was different

It is an extremely rigorous choice for a summer job.

Advice

Act and prepare for a legitimate employment experience. You will not be an intern. You will be tasked with the same responsibilities as full time employees.

Reading Tutor

July - September 2018 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

It was a very rewarding job in which I connected deeply with my students and was personally invested in their success, which made it even sweeter when they made breakthroughs.

What I wish was different

It was definitely a little stressful at times when students’ behavioral issues impeded their learning, because it would put me in a bind- on one hand, respect their learning disability and the way it affects them but on the other, keep pushing for learning and value their time and their parent’s money.

Advice

Remember what it was like to be a child and to be forced to do something you know you were bad at- that’s what these kids do every day and they’re so brave for trying.

Reading Tutor

July - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Really fun environment. Good experience working with kids. Supportive co-workers.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more stable hours. There were some days in which I did not have anything scheduled. However, that is expected especially when working with kids and during the summer when kids go on vacation.

Advice

Don't be too stressed about getting through all the tasks for the lesson. Try to build a relationship with all of your students.

Advice

This is a challenging position. There are many nuances to the job and it requires excellent multitasking skills to excel. Working with kids who have a range of behavior health concerns and learning disabilities requires 100% from you, 100% of the time. Bring your A+ game!

Speech and Language Clinician

What I liked

Good Pay, full time hours, good development, fun working with kids, learned a lot about learning and behavioral divergencies, positive workplace environment

What I wish was different

I would prefer working for a non-profit or a business that offers accessible, subsidized programs. the program itself is very effective but expensive. I wish they had trained us better in handling behavior.

Advice

It's fun, if not demanding. One of the better summer jobs available if you enjoy working with kids.

What I liked

I loved working with all different types of kids. It was so interesting because even though the same materials were used with each student, every session was different because the student's personality and character would change how you ran that specific session. Also, as tricky as it sometimes was, working with students who had behavioral issues was extremely rewarding personally. Issues that arose with a student would not only keep you on your toes, but it would also allow you to empathize with the student and try to work around a problem that they viewed as insurmountable.

Advice

Be prepared for anything! You get to work with all different types of kids, some of whom have previous diagnoses that come out at odd times, and things happen that you never think would. It can be frustrating in the moment to have to deal with some types of behaviors or situations, but it all is worth it. Looking back, those student who were the most difficult to work with were some of my favorites. The struggle you go through for them pays off in the end, but the struggle is still there in the moment. Just keep pushing through
