Summer camp counselor for blind and disabled students
June - July 2021 • Napa, CA
What I liked
I really enjoyed having the experience to work with blind and disabled children because of what I learned from them and all of the similar experience I had gone through when I was growing up since I am also blind. One of the major responsibilities as a counselor was to give the appearance of roll model that the kids could eventually learn from so that in their future they can get into a stable lifestyle living in any condition that they may be in. since the summer camp is a yearly event, it is very possible to accomplish goals such as these. many of these kids have actually gone for years in a row since they were about eight years old up until 16 or 18 years old.
What I wish was different
There isn’t really much that I would like to have been done differently. This year‘s session ran very smoothly considering the fact that it was the reopening of the summer camp since the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic. So unfortunately for us and the campers there was a lot of Covid restrictions that we had to follow in order to keep the summer camp running. Unfortunately what that meant was instead of hiring a kitchen staff that would serve food for all meals throughout the day and evenings and night, this year‘s session was connected to a boxed lunch system similar to those that are given during elementary school cafeteria.
Advice
I would definitely advise people to volunteer or work in this field not necessarily in the same summer camp but at least some place similar since it’s a really great learning experience that you can learn from them, and they can learn from you.
