This was my third year working in the position of being a camp counselor at the YMCA. I loved being back with the kids. I essentially got to play games with them all summer, while teaching them valuable life skills through the activities that we did. This was the first year though that I was an assistant supervisor. But I enjoyed having the extra responsibility and input on how things were being done.
What I wish was different
There were a few problems that came up over the summer with a few of the other counselors that were working. I might have handle these problems differently than what was done.
Advice
If someone is looking to be a camp counselor I would tell them that no matter what, the kids come first. It is a very physically, mentally, and emotionally draining job. But while you are at work you cannot let that effect how you interact with the youth. Also be prepared to handle whatever is thrown at you. You never know what is going to happen when you have 300 plus kids in a small space.
