Liberty Mutual Insurance

Inside sales intern

May - August 2019 • Chandler, AZ

What I liked

I loved actually learning about insurance and the fact that Liberty paid for me to become a licensed agent

What I wish was different

I wish training would have been a little more exciting but it’s always difficult learning something new

Advice

Show motivation and enthusiasm and you will do great. In the beginning of the internship get ready to study your heart out

Sales Associate

May - August 2018 • Norwood, MA

What I liked

Sales teaches you skills that transcends into other fields so I feel more confident when looking into other fields that I will be able to compete with other applicants.

What I wish was different

The biggest struggle was the commute. I was interviewing for the Boston office but something came up and I was transferred. It wasn't ideal and if I could change it I would but I made it work and got some real-life experience out of it, like buying a car and having to maintain it. I was the only intern in my office too. I was really looking forward to connecting with people closer to my age but it was not the case.

Advice

Even if Sales is not for you, do not write it off. Being confident and influential is a skill that will take you places wherever you end up. Furthermore, Liberty Mutual is a great company. I always felt welcomed and a part of the branch, even if was there for 12 weeks.

Sales

May - August 2018 • Lake Mary, FL

What I liked

Working for a big corporation has its benefits such as FTO (flexible time off) and getting flown out to Boston for a Senior Seminar.

What I wish was different

Probably the industry. Not that interesting and could not see myself there further than the internship.

Advice

Always have a positive attitude in whatever you do, and build relationships.

Tech Start Intern

May - August 2018 • Dover, NH

What I liked

The pay was highly competitive and my coworkers were fun and kind.

What I wish was different

It was in the middle of nowhere and the work wasn't extremely meaningful.

Be sure to investigate location before accepting an offer; I didn't do a through enough job and ended up very far from the city I thought I'd be working in.

Actuarial Intern

May - August 2018 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I got the opportunity to work with my team on a real project to be actually used by the business, as opposed to a made up “intern” project. I could also tell that my manager valued my input, and that without the work I did this summer the project I was on could not have been completed.

Software Developer Intern

June 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I enjoyed working at Liberty Mutual Insurance (LMI) because of the laid back environment it provided. After talking to each employee I met I always heard that their favorite part of working at LMI was the work life balance. I enjoyed working on my own project that I was able to decide what I thought was the best plan of action to achieve the desired goal.

What I wish was different

Although having my own project was a great experience giving me a lot of freedom, it would have been nice to work directly on the team for a small portion. Working directly on the team can give you a closer experience of what it is like to work at a place full-time and get a better idea of if you want to go back. Luckily for me I was offered part time work during the school year and have been able to add working on the team as part of my experience.

Advice

If you are able to Intern at Liberty Mutual make sure to take advantage of all of the intern events and get to know the people who you are interning with. Also make sure to talk to other people who work at the company to hear about their experiences to help shape your idea of what the company is like.

Application Developer Intern

June - August 2017 • Portsmouth, NH

What I liked

I was given the opportunity to write production code for a from-scratch project, as opposed to modifying or refactoring code for an existing projects (which is how a lot of developer co-ops are). I worked on the consumer mobile app rebuild project, which was really nice because I knew a lot of real users will someday be using the work I did. Liberty also invests a lot into making quality experiences for interns with events, lunches, networking opportunities, etc.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more interns on my team. Each team had 1-2 interns so it was tough to interact with my peers except at company-sanctioned intern events.

Advice

Don't be afraid to reach out to the other interns who sit in your office, even if you don't see them regularly. Having a level of support from your peers is important.
