Lexmark International, Inc.

Electrical Engineer Co-op

January - May 2023 • Lexington, KY

What I liked

I loved the flexibility, as well as the things I did. I got to see alot of cool labs that lexmark has, as well as alot more about how they operated as a company.

What I wish was different

I wish it could have been longer, but a personal reason cut it short.

Advice

Just try and apply to everything you can, and really put yourself out there.

Photoconductor Manufacturing Intern

May - August 2019 • Boulder, CO

What I liked

Amazing company culture: I was able to work independently when I wanted, but I always knew I could rely on the full-time staff to answer questions and ensure my work was done properly.

What I wish was different

I would have loved a bit more group work. Most of my projects were undertaken by myself and my mentor. A project with a few more employees would have been a great learning experience.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and don't worry about your performance too much.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Lexington, KY

What I liked

I loved the atmosphere of a professional software engineering working environment. It lacks the excessive unpredictability that you find at in college, being the spontaneity of projects, homework, extracurricular activities, that always can throw a wrench in your schedule and can even drag you down from the long grind. At Lexmark, I kept consistency in my work flow, with a start time and end time that was the same daily, and if I had a conflict, I would simply make up the time elsewhere. I had a supporting cast of engineers deeply experienced in various fields of Computer Science, and I could always find a resource depending on the discipline of a project I was assigned. We had deadlines to meet, but having the focus of my Lexmark projects while at work away from all the other things I juggle on a day to day basis at college is so much less stressful.

What I wish was different

I wish I was exposed more to commercial front end software, projects for which I could actually see the results get put on the market. I also wanted to gain more experience in fields that were in my interests, such as app development, and ground up full stack development of applications.

Advice

Network with your coworkers. There's lots of mobility in the software engineering industry, and you never know if 10 years from now you'll be working a more prestigious job across the country or still where you started off at right after college (which hopefully is already an extremely prestigious position to begin with). But taking the time to speak with other workers, understand more about the professional software development cycle, and being able to allow other people to get to know me, opens up so many doors for my future career.

What I liked

Friendly environment, great pay for freshman intern

What I wish was different

The only complaint I had was that I wish it was closer to my hometown. All around a great learning experience.

Advice

Be nice to your co-workers. People who try to step on others to get ahead will not succeed at lexmark.

Hardware Connectivity Co-op

June - September 2018 • Lexington, KY

What I liked

The culture was very nice. Everybody was willing to work together and help, even with subjects outside of their purview.

What I wish was different

I went in at a slightly inconvenient time - all the interns arrived a month before I did, and left a month before I did, so I didn't manage to interact too much with the other interns.

Advice

Feel free to ask questions. Everyone is really nice.
