Advice

Understand all of the necessary job requirements and how to fulfill them while working. Whether you’re learning, enjoy your position, or what you’re doing has no relevance to anything you’ve ever done before, the most important part of an internship is to exceed performance expectations for your individual position.

Retail Salesperson

May 2014 - July 2018 • Baraboo, WI

What I liked

This occupation took me out of my shell. I'm usually a recluse introvert, but since the job required us to speak to others, I was able to improve on my interpersonal communications skills. I was later promoted to middle management. This allowed me to find responsibility in teaching others how to work the register, information on the products, keeping the stockroom organized, and opening and closing on occasion.

What I wish was different

Our turnover rate was quite common. I believe we could have built up morale with more group meetings and/or miniature parties to build camaraderie. The store manager also could have improved on congratulating the staff when they had reached the sale's quota.

Advice

Make sure that drama in the workplace is addressed and quelled before it gets worse. If it is ignored, grudges are held between the staff. Staff workers must also make sure they are not taken advantage of by completing manager's tasks while not being paid the proper wage for their boss's duty.
