Nurse Extern

June 2022 • Allentown, PA

What I liked

As a nurse extern, I get valuable experiences and have done various skills that I like which include: providing direct care to heart, lung, and vascular patients at a 30:1 patient-nurse extern ratio in the Transitional Open Heart Unit (TOHU) while performing routine ADL support, patient vital signs, EKGs, blood sugar monitoring, phlebotomy blood draws, hemocultures, urinalysis laboratory tests, bladder scans, foley catheter removals, and Hema Prompt tests.

What I wish was different

I wish that they were better about the pay transition from technical partner ($15.45) to nurse extern II ($17.50), as I am still in the works of getting my back-pay.

Advice

I believe that any aspiring nurse, or anyone with a passion for helping people, should apply to become a nurse extern or nurse assistant in order to get great fundamental nursing skills plus hands-on job experience. This job has made me a better nursing student and a more compassionate person, too.

Research Scholar

May - August 2019 • Allentown, PA

What I liked

I enjoyed being in a hospital system where I was able to experience so many different aspects of patient care, both clinical and administrative. I spent days with fantastic surgeons in the operating room as well as shadowing the president of the hospital and even got to give my input on projects to the Chief of Surgery. It was a very well rounded experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a project that I could have seen from start to finish in the timeframe I was at LVHN, which I understand is rare.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask to branch out. Once I asked my mentor about seeing different areas in the network, he was more than happy to set me up with a multitude of people.

Nurse Extern

June - August 2019 • Stroudsburg, PA

What I liked

I loved how much the staff treated me as a nurse. They did not treat me any differently as an intern, I was able to blend right in and be just like all the other nurses. I also was able to do a lot of things along side my nurse.

What I wish was different

Nothing really! I had such an incredible experience

Advice

Do not be shy, and just go for it! The nurses want to teach, if you show how passionate and interested you are, they will teach you more.

Research Scholar

June - August 2019 • Lehigh Valley, PA

What I liked

I was able to have a physician mentor who adjusted my internship to my interests in research but also clinical exposure. I was able to learn more about the administrative aspects of medicine and gain a broader view of the health system. I was also able to build meaningful relationships with my fellow interns as well as many mentors.

What I wish was different

I wish I would've took advantage of more clinical observation opportunities.

Advice

Actively seek out opportunities and when you have the opportunity to partake in an internship or research, immerse yourself in the experience. By immersing yourself in the experience you'll build meaningful relationships, you'll learn if that field is where your interests truly lie.

nursing

January 2018 • Bethlehem, PA

What I liked

I liked the community that was one the unit and how well every one worked together. I learned a lot through this experience and I believe that it has enhanced my skills for my future nursing career.

What I wish was different

I wish that this job was closer to where I attend school so that I could continue to work and learn throughout the school year since this was such a great experience for me!

Advice

I feel that everyone should seek out internship opportunities in their job fields, especially during college or over the summer. I feel that not only does this look great on a resume and open up a lot of opportunities for you in the future, but it also enhances your skills and understanding of whatever you may be studying. I also feel that this internship made me more marketable and helped land me my dream job!

Accounts Payable Intern

June - August 2019 • Allentown, PA

What I liked

I loved the company culture! It was focused on learning and experiencing a position and what the real world was like. There wasn’t any pressure to do certain things and all of my colleagues were excited to have me and ready to help me learn and develop.

What I wish was different

I wish that it wasn’t a stipend. I got paid on my last day of work and it was very stressful not having money all summer, since I did have to drive there everyday. They also did not specify the hours so I was very shocked that I was working 40hrs a week while other interns in the same office would come in at 9 and leave at lunch. Needs to be more structured, I didn’t know what I would be doing day-to-day.

Advice

Be open to trying a position you wouldn’t normally be interested in. I interned in the Accounts Payable department with only 2 accounting courses under by belt, and being a RMI major.

PSN-POA

May 2019 • Allentown, PA

What I liked

I loved how welcoming the atmosphere and the staff were to me. And how easy they made adjusting to the hospital.

What I wish was different

I wish with my position I would have gotten to do more. But I understand I couldn’t do too much because I had only one semester of clinical under my belt.

Advice

I would say if you see a great opportunity take it while you can!

What I liked

I really enjoyed being able to work with patients who were homeless and then denouncing the stigma associated with them.

Advice

Stigma around homeless people should not affect the way you treat them.
