It helped me to learn how to communicate with parents better, since I was working with infants who’s parents were very involved. I also learned more about teamwork, as this organization is short staffed and I needed to fill many positions.
What I wish was different
I wish I had gotten to work with the preschoolers more.
Advice
Don’t be afraid to ask questions of your superiors, it’s better to ask then to take a guess.

What I liked
Really amazing and fun work environment! The kids are great and come from really diverse backgrounds. I loved my boss Juan Pimentel, he cares so much about the kids and his employees, and is a really great program director. It is a great way to learn more about the Isla Vista and Goleta community. It helped me know what it is like to work with kids, and affirmed that I do not want to be a teacher, but that I am open to working with kids in a clinical/counseling capacity.
What I wish was different
It would've been nice if there were more flexible hours. I worked for the after school program at IV elementary so the shifts were from 2:45-6:00, so if you have classes at that time, it makes it hard to get shifts.
Advice
Care about what you are doing for these kids and the community! This job should not just be about a paycheck.
