Landscape Architect

May 2021 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

Working at Landworks has been an excellent experience for me. After two years of full-time work, I was prepared enough to take and pass the Landscape Architecture Registration Exam and receive my license. This firm cares a lot about building up talented professionals by both teaching and giving opportunities to grow into new responsibilities. Mentorship is a critical component, and the staff benefits from it. We are an in-person firm with every staff member in-office, but also offer remote flexibility when an employee's schedule needs it. I have benefitted very much from being in-person, from both access my managers when I have questions, to enjoying the office culture. The firm is also multi-disciplinary, with a balance between civil engineering and landscape architecture. There is a clear benefit to both sides that we work in the same house, rather than in opposition. Landworks is very active in local real estate associations as well and maintains itself at the forefront of development tides in Charlotte. Overall, the firm's established reputation for excellent design and engineering services in Charlotte and beyond is more than well-earned.

Advice

Don't be daunted by the idea of coming to Charlotte. It's a great city to live in and establish yourself. Networking remains to be an excellent tool to use amongst professional and your own personal associations, and has a lot of impact in Charlotte, even as large as the city is. Finally, with regard to the position, don't be afraid to ask questions. Take notes, and build on what you've learned. I would not have been prepared enough for the LARE if I hadn't done that.

Intern

May - August 2019 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

The internship prepared me very well for the field of landscape architecture. The staff are very, very knowledgeable and willing to share what they know. While my internship was a first-time affair for the firm, it led to a full-time position. There is a clear intent to develop skills in their employees that equip them for everything they need as professional landscape architects.

Advice

Be intentional about personal communication. This is not a position where you can avoid communicating with your project managers or co-workers.
