Builder

May - July 2018 • Livonia, MI

What I liked

I enjoyed building assembly lines because it allowed me to experience the automotive industry from the ground up. I was able to see the interaction between engineers who worked with the builders who directly implemented their work and watched the process from beginning to end.

What I wish was different

I wish the plant I worked at was more electronically inclined, especially with their blueprints. Other plants I've seen give each builder a computer, and rather than going to the one workstation to print out a new angle, each builder is able to view any piece they want in any fashion.

Advice

If you want to enter any field of work, take a look at the ground floor and immerse yourself in it so you can understand how your plans will be put into action.

Software Engineer Intern

June - August 2017 • Austin, TX

What I liked

Very smart, supportive, and collaborative people. You're put on a small team so help is always there. They give you very worthwhile projects as well. Austin is also an amazing city so there's that.

What I wish was different

The HR is based out of Detroit, where as the R&D software office is in Austin, so they can be slow to get back to you etc. I wish the compensation was more relative to other tech jobs (KUKA pays rising Juniors $20/hr, rising Seniors $22/hr) with a $800 a month housing stipend as of 2017.

Advice

Embrace the culture. Do yoga at work on Thursday. Do board game lunches on Wednesday. Get involved because the people are really cool and you'll have a lot to learn.
