What I liked

I loved the culture at KSJG. It was the best internship experience I could have had. The staff was amazing and really took the time to teach me and show me what was required during an audit.

Tax Inter

July - August 2019 • Irvine, CA

What I liked

I love that I was able to do full tax returns but at the same time spend time with the employees getting to know them and getting to know the firm.

What I wish was different

I only wish that this intern had been longer and done during the tax season so I had more opportunities to do different types of returns

Advice

Spend time learning material but spend more time understanding the people and the culture

Tax Intern

What I liked

I liked how applicable the work was to my career. I completed tasks that were at a staff-level. Everyone in the office was willing to help and made the experience a great one.

What I wish was different

The internship program was very short, and it went by way too fast. By the time the 6-weeks were over, I was just starting to feel comfortable with the work I was doing. Overall, KSJG should develop a more robust and formal recruiting program in order to properly compete with the other public accounting firms in the area.

Advice

I would advice others interested in public accounting not to underestimate mid tier or local firms. Smaller companies like KSJG can offer you a more hands-on internship experience with more exposure to the actual work you will do when you are hired full-time. The pay is competitive and work-life balance is much, much better than bigger firms as well.

Audit Intern

What I liked

The firm values training interns as one of their own staff members. The seniors and managers are very approachable and give constructive feedback. The seniors I personally worked with are open to sharing their own life experiences, goals and ambition. The firm culture values a family-oriented work environment. The internship itself provided me with a practical experience in audit that the classroom settings cannot provide.

What I wish was different

The initial in-house training was on my internship start day. The senior who was in charge of training gave us an introduction to the software and the work papers we would be working on. The next day, I was paired up with a senior to work in the field., at the client's workplace. During fieldwork, it is harder to have training on the entire system but rather the specific work paper layout and the documents supporting the work paper. However, I hope that some more explanation was given in regards to the reason why each work paper is set up the way it is. I would also appreciate the senior explained more about the workflow and which how each work paper correlates to one another. These training on the general concept behind the work paper would be helpful to provide before fieldwork.
