KPMG LLP

Tax Intern

June - August 2019 • Harrisburg, PA

What I liked

There was a thorough training in Orlando where we got to network with other KPMG interns.

What I wish was different

I wish projects were set aside for interns so it wasn’t their responsibility to scavenge for work.

Advice

Make friends as soon as possible in the office- it’ll enhance your experience.

State & Local Tax Intern

June 2019 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

KPMG has a great training and mentoring program that helped me integrate myself into the company.

What I wish was different

Advice

Be vocal about offering to help others. If you don’t have any work to do reach out to other employees in your department and ask if they could use help with anything.

Audit Intern

June - August 2019 • Santa Clara, CA

What I liked

The experience was absolutely fantastic. The teams were amazing, the training was phenomenal, and the clients were incredible. The other interns were great to spend time with and reflected the great people that KPMG seeks to employ.

What I wish was different

The travel from San Jose to San Francisco was a little rough so would have not been opposed to sticking to the south bay area but I understood the demand was necessary.

Advice

Go in with an open mind and willingness to learn! Arrogance is incredibly easy to spot in the auditing field and it just makes you look silly so be humble and ready to work and you will have a great experience.

Tax Intern

June - August 2019 • Stamford, CT

What I liked

At KPMG, I felt like I was a part of a team the entire time! The training I received and the people I have met while interning are invaluable. I truly enjoyed my experience and learned so many things in such a short period of time.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more client interaction but also know that there isn't as much client traveling in tax as there is in audit.

Advice

Go in with an open mind and be ready to ask a lot of questions and take a lot of notes!

Developer

June - August 2018 • Montvale, NJ

What I liked

I loved being put on a team and treated as a member of that team as soon as I came aboard. It truly made me feel important and like I was actually doing something important

What I wish was different

I wish there was a more descriptive description of the actual internship, as I was not aware of exactly what I would be working on until the day I walked into the office.

Advice

Come ready to reach out to others and network. This is a very large company and the internship is really what you make of it. There are so many people to meet whether interns or professionals that have been in the industry for over a decade.

IT Advisory, GRC Technology -SAP Intern

June - August 2018 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

The culture of the company. Everyone wants you to succeed and learn. They understand that you may not have prior experience or knowledge, and they want to help you. The availability of the recruiters and my team members were amazing. My mentors in my department were very helpful and encouraging.

What I wish was different

More interns in my department. It was cool to be the only one though.

Advice

This needs to be someone who can problem solve and pick up quickly on how to do things. It is a lot of new information, but it is very important work.

Audit Solutions Inten

June - August 2018 • Montvale, NJ

What I liked

Freedom to pursue projects that interested me. Relaxed work environment. Nice people.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been slightly more structure. The program was not really geared toward software development, so I kind of had to make my own way into that part of the office.

Advice

Definitely be up front about what you want to do and whom you want to work with.

Tax Intern

June - August 2018 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I liked that the work was challenging, and I had the autonomy to request what sort of work I could choose to do--whether that was tax return reconciliation, working with tax law compliance, or general consulting. I learned the most I could out of an internship through this amazing summer.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had a different manager, who I could have meshed personalities with in a better way. I think the people you work with is one of the most important factors to a successful, productive, and enjoyable experience at work; unfortunately, I just didn't fit well with the team at the time.

Advice

I would suggest doing anything beyond what is in your job description; make your work presentable to your higher-ups and easy to review, come early and stay later, reach out and create your own opportunities. That's what makes you stand out.

What I liked

I liked the engagement teams I was on and the amount I got to travel to clients. Additionally, the work that I was given was thoroughly explained, abundant in amount, and very manageable.

What I wish was different

More intern events

Advice

Always show up ready to learn, accumulate questions, and ask/get feedback in bulk so that you don't bother your seniors/engagement team members all day.

Accounting Intern

June - August 2018 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

I had a great experience working with KPMG. I got the opportunity to be a Global Intern and spent half of the summer in Melbourne, Australia. Both in the US and abroad, I gained exposure into the field and valuable experience to start my career in accounting off on the right foot.

What I wish was different

I don't think I have anything I would change about the internship.

Advice

Be a sponge and absorb as much as you can while you're working to fully benefit from the experience.

Great people and atmosphere. The work was exciting and I felt like I was making an impact.

What I wish was different

ITAA Intern

June - August 2018 • Irvine, CA

What I liked

The real-world experience and the people I was working with! The internship program at KPMG is amazing!

What I wish was different

I wish it would've had a little bit more structure. I knew the clients I had, but I didn't exactly know which client I'd be working on for one day until a day or two before I went. The sponteneity was fun for the first couple of times, but it got very stressful driving places when you're in an unfamiliar place and you don't know where you're going for work tomorrow but you know you have to be there.

Advice

Be open to any and all feedback. It's super important to be learning and learning to do things correctly! You're going to make mistakes but learn from them the first time and don't keep making them. Also, if you're not making mistakes, you're not learning!

What I liked

I enjoyed the people I worked with and thought the work was interesting.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have been able get some experience with financial statement audits, not just Employee Benefit Plans and Single Audits.

Advice

My advice would be to network as much as possible and try and create and build relationships over the course of the internship.
