Finance Intern

May - August 2023 • Kohler, WI

What I liked

I worked with the Assurance and Advisory team and thoroughly enjoyed my time with them. The experience was immersive and challenging; I was able to participate in projects with full-time analysts and complete meaningful work. Further, everyone at Kohler is friendly and wants to see you succeed. It is a very inclusive atmosphere.

What I wish was different

Kohler does not offer housing. They offer housing accommodations, but are the responsibility of the intern to pay for. It would've been great to be able to live around Kohler and get to know some of the fellow interns better.

Advice

You control what you get out of this internship. Before your first day, you are tasked with ranking the business units in Kohler you would like to intern in. Make sure you are selecting what interests you. Once the internship begins, ask lots of questions, be a sponge, and try to participate in as many events as you can. Kohler offers a lot of interesting and fun events, it is in your court to participate in them.

Accounting and Finance Intern

May - August 2023 • Kohler, WI

What I liked

I got experience many different programs and platforms. It was a great experience to be able to shadow other departments, tour many different factories, and see how a private company operates. Although it is so large, it feels very small, and you get close with your team. You have so many opportunities at Kohler!

What I wish was different

Advice

My boss instilled in me that if I saw something I wanted to work on or learn more to ask. This is what opened doors for her, and it can allow you to be on different projects or tasks you were not originally planned to.

Finance Intern

May - August 2023 • Kohler, WI

What I liked

I liked how everyone, no matter what job they had, was willing to answer any questions I had and help me out any way they could. I also liked all of the networking and social events that the Accounting/Finance Interns had throughout the summer. We all got to know each other well outside of what we did at work.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have got to do a little more of the day-to-day work that a Finance analyst does. It is hard to just jump right into a project that an analyst would do, but I would recommend asking your manager to be included on meetings that have to do with the projects they are working on so you can see what they do on a daily basis.

Advice

Try to absorb as much knowledge as possible not only from your department, but from other interns as well. Take advantage of all the experiences you get in order to make the most out of your summer.

Corporate Accounting Intern

May - August 2023 • Kohler, WI

What I liked

Kohler's internship program was informative about their business but also about their processes. They use many different applications that could be used in many other businesses. The people were great because they were welcoming and demonstrated that they were constantly learning and improving.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have seen more of the day to day tasks however, the internship is what you make it. If I were to do it again, I would reach out to others and ask. Overall, everyone wants the interns to succeed and are happy to help out where they can.

Advice

This internship is what you make of it. If you have questions or need advice it is your responsibility to go and ask. Everyone wants to help and offer insight. So while your here for three months, try to connect with as many people as possible because their comments and advice can be used throughout your whole career.

Material Handler

May - August 2019 • Sheboygan, WI

What I liked

I liked running around all over the factory to get things. It was like a scavenger for parts. I also liked learning how things assembled to make a generator. It actually motivated me to learn how my car worked.

What I wish was different

I wish I worked under this particular group, I could’ve learned so much about how engines work.

Advice

It really opened my eyes to the real world. I definitely could never work in a factory for the rest of my life, I don’t know how they did it. This really motivated me to stay in college but still a great experience that is helping me go in the direction I want to go in.

What I liked

The schedule is very flexible, management is willing to work with you to fulfill your scheduling needs, fast-paced environment, unique guest experiences and training with hospitality and fine dining

What I wish was different

More training would have been helpful, especially in areas I was weaker in. Additionally, reviews of my performance and guidance on how to improve would also help. Some staff can be easily caught up in negative events and spread gossip.

Advice

Always be open to new experiences and be willing to help others (whether coworker, guest, or management)!

Plant Quality Engineering Co-op

January - August 2019 • Kohler, WI

What I liked

I really liked that I got to learn a lot about quality engineering that I wouldn't learn or experience from just my classes. Being able to experience the day to day responsibilities of a quality engineer along with working with other engineers really helped me to confirm the career path I would like after graduation. Kohler also has a lot of different divisions, from kitchen and faucets to generators, and during my internship there, I was able to learn more about the different divisions and engineering oppurtunities.

What I wish was different

I really enjoyed my internship and there is not much I would change. I had a lot of responsibilities and projects throughout my internship and I even got a few chances to present my projects. However, if I had to change something, I would have liked more day to day work. I preferred super busy days rather than days where I only had a few tasks. It was nice that I had time to attend the intern events that Kohler planned for us.

Advice

Some advice I would give would be to always ask questions. In the beginning of my internship, I was worried about seeming unqualified and complety clueless if I asked too many questions, but I learned pretty quickly that everyone expects you to be complete clueless. So it is better to ask questions and make sure you understand what you are doing and why so that you can do the best job possible.
