What I wish was different
Leadership is far from perfect: there often seems to be a lack of direction or strong relationship-building skills. You have to be liked to have new opportunities because favorites are cherry-picked, as opposed to merit or interest being used.
Advice
Take on as many challenges as possible: join a committee, task force, panel, lunch meeting; anything! Talk to as many different folks in the office as possible, challenge yourself, develop new skills whenever possible!
