KIPP DC Public Schools

Operations Intern

June - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I enjoyed the level of independence I was given to take initiative on projects and then have that initiative trusted by my team members to continue to develop an idea further.

What I wish was different

I wish my supervisor would have been more accessible as well as the other members of my department. Something I didn't realize going into this internship in the Operations department was that the other members in my department were out of the office visiting schools most of the time leaving me to be the only one in the headquarters office. I wish my team members could have been around more often so I a. could have gotten to know them better and b. had people to support me and for me to go to questions when I had questions.

Advice

I would share the piece of advice to ask during interviews what the team dynamic is like and the working habits of the other department members.

Academic Support Intern

June - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

Being able to meet with many members of the KIPP DC headquarters team and learn about their role and experiences, feeling like I was helping to make a difference for students, being given the responsibility to do self-guided work

What I wish was different

I wish I had more of an opportunity to see the schools during the academic year (which wasn't really possible since it was a summer internship.)

Advice

Be open minded and prepared to work under your own guidance, also ask questions and talk to members of the executive leadership

Family and Community Engagement

May - August 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

KIPP DC Headquarters requires all interns to have weekly meetings with workers in the office. This was a phenomenal way to be exposed to the multitude of roles that compromise the headquarters office. We are encouraged to take notes and ask questions, but also to schedule personal lunch meetings if we want to continue the conversation.

What I wish was different

I wish that our schedules were more specfied to each worker. Often times I was given a project at the beginnig of the week, but because of my personal work ethic, it was generally finished by Wednesday, but would still have to come to the office with nothing to work on.

Advice

APPLY! This internship is a phenomenal experience that I am grateful for. KIPP DC Headquarters is intent on ensuring that all interns have the all-around experience when being in the office. They are intent on ensuring that all students get the most out of the time being there.
