Kidventure Camp Counselor

June - July 2019 • Houston, TX

What I liked

I loved working with the kids and getting to impact their lives with fun summer camp activities. I got to personally help and watch one of the kids grow from his social anxiety which was wonderful to see. It got stressful at times but overall, it taught me a lot about patience and positivity. The kids were so much fun to be around and talk to.

What I wish was different

The camp hours sometimes seemed too long but I understood that parents still had to work so it wasn't anything awful and time ended up flying when activities started.

Advice

Go into it with a mindset of impacting young lives with joy and lots of fun. Being a part of camp had some great moments where I wish I could go back and do it all over again to see their smiles!

Camp Counselor

May - July 2019 • Garland, TX

What I liked

I learned how to interact with young (ages 3-6) kids. I liked that I can be silly and fun in my job. I liked that I was in charge of carrying out the curriculum; the creativity. I loved staff bonding and being able to rely on the camp directors. The job helped me build communication skills and my confidence in speaking (and dancing) in front of a large group of people.

What I wish was different

I wish that I was more prepared to deal with children who misbehaved. I wish all staff members contributed equally to the job. I wish there was more scheduled breaks because we often had to be with the kids eight hours each day. I wish there was more structure in how to carry out the curriculum because we often had miscommunication/misinterpretation of the material between the staff members.

Advice

Be confident when interacting with kids because they look up to as their role models.
