Summer Unit Aid

May - August 2020 • Orefield, PA

What I liked

The training was a great experience. Because of COVID we did a hybrid model where we did 40 hours in person one week and then the rest of the courses we had to complete online over the next week or two. I learned a lot about documentation in healthcare, therapeutic versus non therapeutic relationships, and multiple mental illnesses and how best to work with clients who have them. I also liked working with the same clients everyday and getting to know them.

What I wish was different

I wish we had more staff. This job has a high turnover rate which led us to be short staffed a lot of the time and put more responsibility than I should have had at times for being the youngest and least experienced staff member.

Advice

This is not a job for the light hearted, I had some high-highs and a lot of low-lows. It's difficult working with these children but as soon as you see them growing and getting better it makes it all worth it. As long as you have tough skin and are looking to go into the healthcare field, particularly mental health, this job is for you!

What I liked

I can make a difference in kid's lives.

What I wish was different

summertime was the same pay as what I get now.

Advice

Never let the kids know your sacred because at the end of the day they are just mad that they are there and not with a loving family, so they have fear as well. to let them know someone cares, to be there for them in the good and the bad.

What I liked

The interaction I could have with the kids

What I wish was different

Not have been so nervous

Advice

Leave your issues at the door. Staff are the only people the kids see and if you bring in a negative vibe, the kids will pick up on that and the environment will become negative for everyone.
