What I liked

I enjoyed going to work every day; there was a lot of responsibility with planning activities for the kids at camp which involved you being creative, making sure the day was run smoothly, and making sure each kid received the amount of help and attention they needed. It was amazing getting to know the other camp counselors and building relationships with them, and it was also fun getting to know the kids and building good counselor-camper relationships with them throughout the summer.

What I wish was different

I don't know if there is any big thing that I can point out that I wish would have been different. We did have a day full of training prior to camp happening. It would have been helpful to receive a little bit more training on how to deal with specific challenging situations at camp and maybe give some examples and learn how to respond. Although it did take some thinking on your part to learn about those situations, and it was helpful to challenge yourself and learn and discuss in that aspect. The only other thing is I wish we had more time to plan as a team at camp; depending on what your responsibility was, it may have taken a lot of time outside of camp to plan activities. That is all; all in all, amazing summer and awesome experience.

Advice

Go in being yourself! The counselors are amazing and you will feel part of a family right away. Also, the kids love goofy, so don't be afraid to be a little weird. If you are struggling with planning activities, use online resources or don't be afraid to ask other leaders for ideas as well. I think this is a great summer job for anybody who is interested in working with kids in some sort of field.

I loved working with other education majors and the kids.

What I wish was different

I wish that the hours were different. 8-5 is a long day and with lifting for football and workouts it's even longer

Advice

Be open to connecting with kids, and being vulnerable! You can't be a stick in the mud and work with kids. Be adaptable, work with what you have, and be full of energy every day.

What I liked

I loved the people I got to work with as well as working with kids. The camp provided a fun atmosphere and made going to work every day exciting.

What I wish was different

I would have preferred to have made a little bit more money as college is expensive to pay for but it was worth it all the same.

Advice

Work with kids, it is fun! They love when you bring a lot of energy.

What I liked

I love working with kids so this job was a dream come true for me. The hours are first shift during the work week. This was ideal because I still had my nights and weekends available. My boss was extremely flexible with vacation days and the staff are very welcoming and fun to be with.
