I really liked being able to come up with my own desserts for the menu and having a lot of freedom to come up with flavor profiles for other pastry items.

Operations Management Intern
May - August 2019 • Kiawah Island, SC
What I liked
The people I worked with were mostly all my age and doing this as there summer job. I also met students from other colleges and learned to step out of my comfort zone when it came to interacting with strangers. It also taught me a lot about what it’s like working at a private club and gave me experience that I will carry with me throughout my life.
What I wish was different
I was hired as an operations management intern so I was hoping that I would get more experience with what it’s like to be a manager at a place like this. However, I only worked as a hostess/cocktail server. So I would’ve hoped to get more experience behind the scenes.
Advice
When you are being hired make sure they tell you exactly the duties you will be doing ahead of time so you know for a fact that it’s exactly the right fit for you. I loved working at Kiawah and I don’t regret it, however, I wish I would’ve been able to get more experience on what it’s like to be a manager.

Management intern
May - August 2018 • Johns Island, SC
What I liked
I loved the staff, the physical buildings, the employee benefits (housing for interns, family meals, flexibility in scheduling) and my main boss.
What I wish was different
I wish I would have been more prepared with what to pack to wear to work.
Advice
If you are an intern that is in college, many other interns or employees your age will often overlook you or try to get you to bend the rules. Delegate fairly and work alongside them to gain respect. Ask questions as often as you can.
