KeyBanc Capital Markets

Investment Banking Summer Analyst

May - August 2018 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Met and spoke with many leaders (Co-Head of Corporate Bank, Group Head of Debt Capital Markets, Chief Technical Officer, etc.) of the bank even though I was across the country (HQ is in Cleveland). My group, Corporate Banking, Diversified Industries allowed me to see many different types of deals (Asset Based Loans, Cash Flow Loans, Equity Follow-On Offerings, Debt Issuance, M&A pitches) with many different industries (Aero & Defense, Consumer, Industrials, Financial Services) so I learned a lot and the job was different every single day. I learned a lot about how many different corporations operate in their space and how they secure financing. Everybody I talked to was very accessible and willing to help and answer questions. They gave great constructive feedback that allowed me to grow personally and as a finance professional.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could've seen more of the deals I worked on during the summer close because that was a very exciting time. I also wish that we did not have to wear a suit and tie every day like other bank groups.

Advice

Ask as many questions as you can! Get to know your Managing Director, Directors, VPs, Associates, and other Analysts well. You will learn more from an experienced person about what you are doing. They know all the roadblocks that you will see and you can learn how they got to the stage they are at in their career.

Nothing.

Advice

Make sure you always double check things. Also, always be willing to meet with other bankers on your floor and not just your team.
