Kennedy Krieger Research Initiative for Student Enhancement- Undergraduate Program (RISE-UP) Intern
May - August 2019 • Sioux Falls, SD
What I liked
This internship pays for room and board in Sioux Falls and for travel to Atlanta, GA and Baltimore, MD. It is a great way to gain public healt experience and looks great on a resume since it is associated with the CDC!
What I wish was different
This internship places you with a Sioux Falls public health organization. You do not choose the organization. The internship mentor chooses your placement based on the information you provide in the interview. I wish that interns had the opportunity to choose or at least rank preferences.
Advice
This internship is extremely competitive and advertised for "underrepresented students." If you feel that you are qualified, do not be afraid to apply. Contact the South Dakota site director, Dr. Ann Wilson, with additional questions and for help on the application. She is excited to help.

Research Trainee
May - June 2019 • Baltimore, MD
What I liked
This was my first research experience, and it was great to get the chance to observe and learn from the neuropsychology researchers at Kennedy Krieger. I learned a lot from the research process-- from collecting data to organizing it.
What I wish was different
I wished that the experience was a little more hands on. I spent a lot of time sitting at a desk filing paperwork and inputting data to spreadsheets. This was a valuable learning experience, but I would have appreciated more time observing patient visits and neurological testing.
Advice
It's very beneficial to ask on the first day of the internship what your role will look like. I found that unless I asked what the research team wanted me to do that day, I wouldn't have anything to do. It helps to stand up for yourself and let the team know that you want to help and are capable of the work.

MCHC/RISE-UP Intern
May - August 2018 • Sioux Falls, SD
What I liked
This internship was funded through Kennedy Krieger and had three site locations, one in Baltimore at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, one in South Dakota, and one in California. At the beginning of the internship we had the opportunity to meet with interns from all of the other sites at an orientation in Baltimore. This was an incredible experience and opened my eyes to several facets of public health, the orientation was one of the major highlights of the internship. My work in South Dakota entailed working at a Helpline Center, and was also great. This provided opportunities to gain experience though work on a number of projects while making connections with colleagues and the greater community.
What I wish was different
The communication between Kennedy Krieger and each of our individual sites could have been better.
Advice
If you're looking to gain more experience within the field of public health while fostering relationships with the greater community and learning about prominent issues and research, I would highly recommend pursuing this internship opportunity.

Child and Family Therapy Intern
June - August 2018 • Columbia, MD
What I liked
I valued the opportunity to observe client sessions and see family therapy in person.
What I wish was different
I wish there were more opportunities for me to score measures. At my location, there were 3 other interns and I was on site near the end of the week, so most of the measures were scored by the time I was there.
Advice
This internship is what you make it. If you want more opportunities to learn about what you're interested in, don't be afraid to ask.

What I liked
I liked getting real world experience in a field I'm interested in; it was very different from anything done or discussed in my classes
