Just Harvest

Client Engagement and Organizing Intern

May - August 2019 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I enjoyed feeling like I was doing something meaningful to improve the lives of others. I gained interpersonal and communication skills, along with a better understanding of public policy and government.

What I wish was different

I wish the daily routine, work environment, and general tasks had been different. It was an incredibly monotonous work experience. It was quite unfulfilling on a day to day basis, with the exception of holding special events. I feel like I had more to offer than what most of my tasks required of me.

Advice

Understand what you day-to-day experience will look like on the job. Although it was a meaningful experience as a whole, I wish I had known what a day in the life would look like at this job beforehand.

Policy and Community Organizing Intern

What I liked

Survey collecting in Downtown Pittsburgh, attending rallies to support higher minimum wages, expanded public transit and improved healthcare. The staff is knowledgeable and is a kindred team whose members look out for each other.

Advice

Start work with an open mind and heart. You will have days where your empathy is crucial: while taking calls, you might have a 30-minute phone call listening to a grandfather struggling to pay his electric bills. Other days, you will be emailing representatives and learning about state government. If you can work on more than one project concurrently, and you can switch tasks easily, you will thrive at Just Harvest.
