I loved being able to inspire and teach kids what I’m so passionate about. I also really just loved seeing my students style and creativity come to life through sewing and making things like earrings and headbands.
What I wish was different
For me, it turned out to be a mainly sewing focused class because that’s what the students wanted to do. I would have liked to been able to teach them more about the fashion design process as well.
Advice
If you ever have a chance to teach something you love, take it. I learned just as much from my students as they did from me. But make sure you plan ahead and have multiple projects/lesson plans to keep the students engaged and ensure that they’re enjoying their time in your class.

Residential Advisor

What I liked
I loved being part of a team of residential advisers whose job it was to provide a quality summer program experience for a group of 50 incoming high school freshmen. The students themselves were amazing, as they are all Jack Kent Cooke Scholars and were eager to attend their classes and learn from each other and us RA's. I worked with another girl as RA for the first of two girls' floors and it was beautiful being able to mentor the students and at times be like a big sister to them.
What I wish was different
I wish that the other RA's would have gotten along better. Not to sound self-boasting, but I am very self-aware and I know that I work well with others and am able to look past differences. Some of the staff would talk about the other behind each other's backs and I personally don't agree with such behavior. However, overall, the team was able to work cohesively and do well with staying on top of tasks.
Advice
Specifically to this experience, I would share the advice of understanding that the job is very short (4 weeks), so any differences between staff should not be taken too seriously, as time goes by quicker than expected. That said, I would say to enjoy the time you have with the kids and exploring new places. The days may be long, but the weeks fly by!
