Mechanical HVAC Engineer Intern Technical IV
May 2016 - October 2017 • Wichita, KS
What I liked
I liked the fact that I was able to get hands on experience and knowledge about applications of heat transfer, fluids and Design of HVAC that I had learned in the class room. I was constantly challenged by my employer to push the boundaries when it came to innovation and to speak up if I had an idea to bring to the table. I became part of the team at Johnson Controls and was treated with respect during my time there. I was never looked down on because I was an intern.
What I wish was different
I wish that they would train you a little more before throwing you on bigger projects by yourself. It was quite a learning curve though learning that you didn't just have to rely on yourself to get projects done though. The team was always helpful when they had time.
Advice
Get exposure! I can't say that or emphasize that enough. Exposure is the key to success. Own your projects and don't let someone else take credit for all the work. Ask to get in on meetings with higher level people and network. You may not land the job there, but when it comes time to search for a job, those relationships you form with your co-workers could help you land the job of your dreams due to their connections within most fields of Engineering.
