John Deere

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Ankeny, IA

What I liked

The amount of projects always kept me busy and really extended my knowledge and soft skills at the same time. We had many events with other interns and it made it such a fun summer!

What I wish was different

Absolutely nothing!

Advice

I would say to take advantage of every opportunity that’s presented to you. Go to that optional training, attend every intern event and don’t be afraid to reach out to someone you specifically want to talk to because they will be thrilled to talk to you!

Manufacturing Programmer Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Waterloo, IA

What I liked

The opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the real world manufacturing setting.

What I wish was different

Even though I wasn't a huge fan of programming I don't wish anything would have been different. This opportunity taught me that it is something I don't want to do when I am full time.

Advice

It takes time to learn, at times it can be frustrating but understand an internship is short and it's difficult to get to perfection in that time.

Product Development Intern

May - August 2019 • Dubuque, IA

What I liked

There is a strong emphasis on giving interns meaningful work throughout the course of the internship. The culture I experienced was supportive and collaborative. Overall, I felt that most people I worked with were rooting for my success. Deere treats their interns very well. They start investing in you from the moment you start your assignment. I was provided with numerous training opportunities, such as the opportunity to operate construction vehicles, a presentation skills class specifically for interns, and the opportunity to learn about diesel engines by taking one apart. Benefit-wise, interns get the opportunity to opt into 401k benefits, a stock purchase plan, and tuition assistance for classes taken during the internship. You also get a year of service credit for completing an internship.

What I wish was different

Most locations in this company are not optimal if you want to live in a large metroplex. Most of the opportunity at Deere is in small to mid-size cities in Iowa and Illinois.

Advice

If you are willing to move out of state, this experience is worth it. Even if the midwest is not on your radar of places to live, it's worth taking an internship for three months to see if you enjoy it.

Customer and Product Support Intern

May - August 2019 • Cary, NC

What I liked

The best part of my summer with Deere would have to be the diversity of projects assigned and the quality of the people I had the pleasure of working with. I got to expand both my technical and personal skills with the help of many talented people.

What I wish was different

If I could change anything about the summer, I would go back and become more involved in the community. I wish that I would have done more community service projects on the weekends, as well as do more sightseeing in the Carolinas.

Advice

My biggest piece of advice is to be willing to travel. Initially, I was skeptical of moving from the Midwest to the East Coast, but at the end of the day I would have sincerely regretted not taking this opportunity because of the distance from home.

What I wish was different

Advice

Days feel long, months seem shorter and the years fly by in a blink of an eye. Take time to realize the challenges, what makes it fun and that it’ll be worth it later.

Getting the chance to do design work that interested me and traveling to Louisiana for a project.

What I wish was different

When you land an internship, don't be afraid to ask coworkers for help when you're doing tasks you've never done. Also, have fun with it and add your own personal flair to your projects to make it stand out.

Weld Manufacturing Engineer

April - August 2019 • Waterloo, IA

What I liked

I couldn't have asked for a better manager or coworkers, and I loved the work we were doing. Deere is also really good about giving all of their interns opportunities to see different parts of the company and planning activities so that we could enjoy our summer.

What I wish was different

I would have enjoyed more opportunities to shadow other weld engineers in different positions.

Advice

Starting out in a new position can be intimidating at times but I think it's important to still express opinions and ideas. If you don't understand why things are done a certain way don't be afraid to ask why or even suggest better ways to do it. The reason some companies like John Deere are always hiring new talent is for people to bring new ideas to the table.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Waterloo, IA

What I liked

I interned this summer as an Order Fulfillment Process Assembly Manufacturing Engineer. I provided engineering support to the assembly operations of the 8R Row Crop Tractor e23 PowerShift transmission. In this role, I was responsible for managing and delivering assembly process layout changes, integrating tooling for a new product, supporting a limited production build, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives, all to improve and maintain the quality, safety, delivery, and efficiency of John Deere’s processes and products. While interning at John Deere, I also had the opportunity to attend an intern conference with over 500 other interns, network with peers and superiors, organize and participate in volunteer events, complete numerous trainings, do 3 job shadows, and interview 15 people in various functional areas. This has been one of the best summers of my life, mainly due to the incredible experiences I had not only at work this summer, but also due to the 110+ other interns that Deere brought to the Waterloo area. Deere knows how to recruit awesome people – the folks I met this summer were some of the most amazing, friendly, and accepting people I’ve ever met. I loved the work culture at Deere, and, more generally, I enjoyed the mix of technical work and people management work that a manufacturing engineering role contains. I like that manufacturing engineering, in my experience, allows for a healthy mix of office and shop floor work.

What I wish was different

Nothing, really. My experience at John Deere was excellent. I truly wouldn't change anything.

Advice

Take advantage of every opportunity to learn and experience different areas of a company while you're interning there. As an intern with more lenient work requirements than a full-time employee, you often have the freedom to explore the company and interview people in roles that you think you might enjoy.

Internal Audit Intern

May - August 2019 • Moline, IL

What I liked

I really liked the culture of the company. Deere was a great place to work and the people I got to work really lived what the company, as a whole, preached. I really liked the work I was given. I felt like the work I did was meaningful and it gave me opportunities to learn and succeed.

What I wish was different

I wish the scheduling would have been a little different. I was only able to participate in one full audit. Part of that was just the nature of the schedule the Internal Audit department runs off of where I came in at the midpoint of an audit and I left at the midpoint of an audit as well.

Advice

Go talk to people that work in positions that sound interesting to you. And go on tours of the factories! I loved the tours I got to take to see how the loaders or combines are built. But really, any department or position that sounds interesting to you, reach out to the person in that position and see if you can ask them some questions. They will be happy to help.

Electrical Engineering Intern

What I liked

Very friendly coworker, and all willing to help whenever you would get stuck.

What I wish was different

I was mostly working on software all summer and would have rather had more experience with hardware.

Advice

As an intern I had to market myself for different projects in order to stay busy, there wasn't a lot of assigned work per say unless I pushed to be a part of a specific project.
