What I liked

It's a very friendly work environment and everyone's like a family. It's fun to work on shifts with people you get along with, and it helps make the work move along faster. We get employee discounts for meals too, which is good because the caf closes before the closing shifts end. My manager was okay with my flexible schedule, so I could continue working during the school year.

What I wish was different

I always felt that if we had one more person during our shift everything would've gone smoothly. Apparently, everyone that works in food service or retail feels the same way.

Advice

Be prepared to work hard and work smart. You could do the bare minimum, or you could be helpful and do more, so everyone can go home on time.

What I wish was different

Reimbursement for gas should have been WAY higher, no body was even able to tell me how much I was paid per minute on the road for gas. Not even the manager. The discount is also pretty much non-existent. Also, if an employee was vomiting while on the clock, they weren't able to leave until they found a replacement, which I'm pretty sure is against the law/food safety regulations, and you were unable to request time off, even with months of notice, you had to get them covered.

Advice

Do not apply to any Jimmy Johns in the Portland metro area. They're all owned by the same guy, and it's not a great place to work.

What I liked

My manager was so nice and laid out the terms of my contract very clearly. At every step there was someone to tell me how to do something and provide positive feedback as learned the skills required for a job like this. JJ's has very high standards and I'm the type of person that tries to meet those standards. Our customers were all business workers and families in the downtown area, so there were always different types of people. I learned how to interact with personalities and make sure that I was able to do my job.

What I wish was different

Now that I work nights I wish I were able to keep my watch on to check my time. Some managers will keep you on track, some struggle. We are paid one dollar above minimum wage, but I wish I were paid a bit more so I could take in more income.

Advice

I am now able to manage myself even when there is too much on my plate. As a student, I feel this is the perfect part-time job to start off with. I hope to continue here through college, but just know that you do not choose which hours you want. Our managers are understanding but this is a business.
