I was able to get hands on practical accounting experience within a professional office environment. My superiors were always seeking to give me assignments outside my basic accounts payable, invoice and purchase order tasks. These assignments would often be related to tasks the CFO or Head of HR was working on, which made every day more meaningful and educational.
On top of this, the office environment was great! Everyone was welcoming and treated me as an equal. I never was afraid to ask a question if needed help with something. The office was dog friendly, we would "celebrate" bagel Friday every Friday, and on extra hot days, upper level management would order ice cream for the employees working in the super hot warehouse. These little things made the office feel more like home, and I can honestly say I never woke up and dreaded going to work.
What I wish was different
The only thing I wish would have been different was if I could have participated more on the accounts receivable side of things in regards to my responsibilities. However, I understood why as a new employee I was only given access to Accounts payable side at first.
Advice
Don't be afraid to take a position outside of what you are looking to do. You never know what will get out of it. I am a finance major and was not sure how I felt accepting an accounting internship. But I learned a lot and had a great overall experience because of it.
