Jacksonville University

Orientation Leader

June - September 2019 • Jacksonville, FL

What I liked

Getting the chance to connect with first year Jacksonville University students and be one of the first people they meet on this campus.

What I wish was different

Everything was pretty perfect, the only downside I could think of was the rain changing some schedules, but even that had an upside.

Advice

Buy a carry on fan and bring plenty of snacks and water. The days are very long, but if you maintain a positive attitude it's all super fun.

Researcher

June - August 2019 • Jacksonville, FL

What I liked

The opportunity to experience professional advice from the sport psychologist at JU was second to none. I enjoyed the routine of gaining experience and researching material directly related to what I potentially want to do with my career. It felt empowering to do something so unique to my interests. I developed a consulting process and theory on performance excellence that I continue to work on.

What I wish was different

I wish the process of registering the internship through handshake was simpler. There were a lot of individuals who had to approve the process and if they didn't see the email in time, the request would expire.

Advice

I would advise those seeking experience to be adamant, meaning, email the approvers of the process and make sure they approve it before it expires.

Marketing Intern

June - August 2019 • Jacksonville, FL

What I liked

It was an awesome experience! Ms. Katy Jackson, who was my internship supervisor, was very nice, helpful, and supportive of me. She taught me a lot about teamwork and marketing platforms such as Meltwater and Basecamp. It is my first ever internship, and I definitely learned and improved a lot professionally. The internship helped me discover more about my career path and opportunities in the industry.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have had a few more months to do the internship. There were a lot of exciting projects that I started but could not finish before school starts.

Advice

I knew about this great internship through my international student adviser, Mr. Louis Reich. My initial internship did not work out, and I was very anxious and stressed. I also came and talked to the Career Resource Center to resolve the problem with my initial internship, and they helped me out a lot. Therefore, one piece of advice I would like to share is always reaching to people when you encounter a problem, especially your professors, advisers, and the people at the Career Resource Center. I would have never gotten a chance to turn my summer around with a great internship without the connections I have and the great resources at Jacksonville University. I still visit the Career Resource Center now and then, so they can help me with job search and professional development.
