Sales Intern

May - August 2019 • Boise, ID

What I liked

This company is amazing when it comes to culture and people. Everyone was friendly, welcoming, and wanted to help me learn and develop. The company and recruiter made the transition from CO to ID easy with financial help, providing housing, as well as very welcoming to share best places in town to eat, hike, etc. I loved that there were other interns to collaborate and share the experience with. I had the opportunity as an intern to be a part of the Intern's Social Committee. An "extracurricular" to my sales position, we planned events, networking, relationship building, and community opportunities for interns not only located in Boise, but all Simplot locations. Boise was an amazing place to live for the summer, an easy transition culturally.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been more hands on with sales operations and continued to develop my soft and hard skills. I learned a lot about the company as a whole and how the different departments function together. But I would have rather had some real world experience. It was a lot of computer jobs, tedious work, that I worked on for two full months. The task very quickly got boring.

Advice

Don't be afraid to give a certain career a chance. I was very torn about taking this internship because I didn't know if i wanted to pursue sales, or work in a corporate building. I enjoyed the experienced and learned a lot about the industry, about being a professional, about the careers of several individuals that worked for Sipmlot, and additionally I learned a ton about myself. It's an incredible experience to move to a new city, start a new job, in a new field, get to know new people, only if you lean all in.

Soil Sampler

April - August 2019 • Pasco, WA

What I liked

The wages and overtime pay were very generous and I learned a lot about soil science and pesticide and herbicide application.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had worked a normal, 40 hour week and not the 60 hour weeks I worked. I was burned out every day off and by the end of the summer I was not very prepared to return back to full time schooling.

Advice

This is a great summer job but you must be willing to work hard and long hours, like any job in agriculture would be.

What I wish was different

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is to make the most out of it, if you have any questions, please do ask! The employees want to help you as much as you want to learn from them so put into it what you want to get out of it!

Field Intern

June - September 2018 • Moses Lake, WA

What I liked

I enjoyed everything about this internship. I was given an opportunity to shadow different positions within the company. I spent time with different people in the company to learn about their position. All my questions were answered, so I had the opportunity to learn quite a bit about potatoes. Everyone I had the opportunity to work with was awesome! If I was ever given the opportunity to work with them full-time, I would not hesitate on taking the job!

Improving Plant Efficiency

May - August 2017 • Rock Springs, WY

What I liked

They tried to give me the same duties that they would give a full time chemical engineer. It was very helpful to learn what sort of things I will be doing as a full time engineer. They were very helpful and were more than willing to help answer any questions that I had.

What I wish was different

I really only wish that I could have worked more overtime. There was a few opportunities but I would have liked a lot more.

Advice

Internships can be overwhelming at first because of the complexity of most plants, but it helps if you look at the theory behind the processes in the operating manuals in the first part of the internship. This helps in understanding the plant as they explain certain equipment, or tasks that you will be working on.
