J.F. Ahern

Fire Protection Design Intern

June - August 2022 • Fond du Lac, WI

What I liked

I really liked working for this company and showing up to work everyday. The company's attitude towards its employees was nothing short of excellent all the way down to the field employees and interns. Fire protection design is a very niche industry, but still did work more than busy work or paper pushing.

What I wish was different

Nothing, I enjoyed all aspects of working for Ahern

Advice

Go in expecting to be overwhelmed with the amount of information you will be given in the first week and always ask questions.

Fire Protection Design Intern

February 2018 - June 2019 • Deforest, WI

What I liked

I really enjoyed the work atmosphere. Ever since my interview and throughout my employment I felt like they cared about me and there seemed to be an intentional effort to build community. I was able to develop relationships with those in my office and even a few of the employees at the Fond du Lac office. It was easy to interact with those in management/superintendent roles and learn more about the opportunities in the company.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask questions! Everyone I interacted with knew that this was most likely a totally different type of work than I was used to, as they don't teach fire protection in classes. The project managers and other designers in the office have so much experience and are willing to help you grow as you learn a whole new trade.

What I liked

I like the company and my coworkers. The position has a good balance of being in the office and being at job sites.

Advice

Ask every question possible because unless you have previously worked in this field, I doubt you know that much about it.
