Fire Protection Design Intern

February 2018 - June 2019 • Deforest, WI

What I liked

I really enjoyed the work atmosphere. Ever since my interview and throughout my employment I felt like they cared about me and there seemed to be an intentional effort to build community. I was able to develop relationships with those in my office and even a few of the employees at the Fond du Lac office. It was easy to interact with those in management/superintendent roles and learn more about the opportunities in the company.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask questions! Everyone I interacted with knew that this was most likely a totally different type of work than I was used to, as they don't teach fire protection in classes. The project managers and other designers in the office have so much experience and are willing to help you grow as you learn a whole new trade.

Assistant Project Manager Intern

What I liked

I like the company and my coworkers. The position has a good balance of being in the office and being at job sites.

What I wish was different

Advice

Ask every question possible because unless you have previously worked in this field, I doubt you know that much about it.

Manufacturing Engineer Intern

May 2016 • Fond du Lac, WI

What I liked

I like the friendly work environment at Ahern. It is a family company feel but is large enough that there are many opportunities for growth and learning. Everyone here is willing to help me learn and encourages me to be proactive in seeking out areas of interest. The position I had changed daily, which I enjoyed. Some days I was in the factory, others in the office, and sometime I was on job sites which allows me to see and learn even more being able to connect how parts of the company are able to function as one.

What I wish was different

This is hard because of the fact I still work at Ahern, therefore I have not yet reflected on the experience. One wish I have had is to be more confidence to ask questions and reach out to people more often.

Advice

Get to know people. People typically like to help and you never know when someone could be of aid. Be friendly and say hi always because people are much more receptive and willing to help when they know you.
