IXL Learning

Software Engineer Intern

June - August 2018 • San Mateo, CA

What I liked

IXL has a great mission of making math education easier and more accessible, and it was gratifying to do work that I felt made a positive impact on students around the world. The company has good norms of work-life balance, and I never felt pressured to work more than I felt comfortable. Team members were supportive and collaborative.

What I wish was different

It took some time to begin working on more substantial, self-driven projects, so a fair part of my internship was spent on bugfixes and piece work, which I found to be less educational and gratifying than taking an initiative from start to finish.

Setting clear expectations with my mentor up front was extremely helpful in evaluating my progress and areas of change later on in the internship.
