Iowa Department of Transportation

Engineering Intern

May - August 2021 • Manchester, IA

What I liked

I enjoyed the construction experience and how I was highly valued at the Iowa Department of Transportation. I earned valuable experience and had a lot to talk about in my interviews during my last semester of college. I also enjoyed the opportunity to meet new people and build lifelong relationship with some of my co-workers.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more resources to research about the internship or wish I would have talked to someone about their experience because it quite literally is a win-win situation for any person in their college career to seek an internship as early as possible. I was scared at first but I wish I would have applied sooner because I highly enjoyed it.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is absorb as much as possible and don't be scared to ask questions. As long as you are confident and willing to work hard you will be successful. As soon as you can get into that internship because there is a high percentage you will be hired as an intern and the job experience is needed for when you graduate to receive that dream job you are searching for. Even if you do not know what path you want to take during college an internship is a great way to peak your interest in many different fields.
