Intralox, LLC

Plastics Engineering Intern

August 2021 • New Orleans, LA

What I liked

The friendliness of everyone I worked with. I could ask a question to anyone and they would stop what they were doing to help me. Everyone here genuinely wants you to learn.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish had been different would be the presence of Covid and Hurricane Ida while I was living in New Orleans for this internship.

Advice

Avoid staying at your desk for too long because you can’t soak up all the information that Intralox has to offer by just sitting at your desk.

What I liked

This Co-Op experience has far surpassed my expectations not only at this amazing company but moving to New Orleans. Intralox has a long standing relationship with Umass Lowell and the Co-Op program, they know exactly where your skills are in accordance with courses taken and how to best position you to learn more than you ever could in a class. They treat you as a full time employee with hands on projects that you oversee while working with all different types of departments if you wish. Moving to New Orleans was at first a scary thought but I am more than happy I did not let that hold me back. Living on/near the Tulane University campus has made it even easier to get assimilated to the area. There is always a festival or event happening each weekend to keep you busy with a lot of public parks and outdoor activities.

What I wish was different

This took me some time to figure out because its hard to complain about this amazing company but the one thing I wish was different would be working with other interns during my time. This only happened to me because the summer time is where they have a vast number of interns at the company. Unfortunately in the fall I was the only intern in my department. As much as I wish I had an intern go through the experience with me, being "alone" let me be more hands-on and take on more projects than I would have with other interns present.

Advice

Have an open mind and don't be afraid to try out new things. The biggest things I've learned outside of technical skills is the importance of learning other skills through other employees at the company outside of my department. My boss was beyond supportive of me wanting to explore other aspects of the company such as extrusion, mold making, mechanical engineering and much more. Step outside your comfort zone because this is the time for you to learn what your interests are.
