InterSystems

Application Services Intern

May - August 2023 • Cambridge, MA

What I liked

InterSystems was a fantastic company to intern with! I was amazed at the culture of collaboration and support among all the teams I interacted with. I also appreciated the opportunity to take ownership of a short-term project, and present a finished application to the company.

Solution Development Program

July - December 2022 • Cambridge, MA

What I liked

*** Please note that this is for a full time position; HandShake didn't give me the option to select it on the review screen*** SDP program consists of 3 weeks of training (on products and their proprietary coding language, Objectscript) followed by 3, 6-week rotations between different departments with a project, an assigned mentor, and a team. This is followed by a review process and (basically guaranteed) full-time employment in one of the SDP departments. Rotations give a good overview of the company and valuable exposure to the different product-related roles. The company has an excellent work-life balance and its culture prioritizes independence and respect; generally, this is an enviable starting position for any college graduate.

What I wish was different

The management, prioritization, and planning of the rotations between departments vary, resulting in varying levels of difficulty and support for different rotations. Depending on your project, plan to tap into the expertise of coworkers within and without your team; participants are expected to own the support necessary to complete their project. The clarity of the project also varies -- some projects will have a clear description of the problem and proposed solution, and others may require you to do the investigation of the issues yourself.

Advice

The most difficult part of the process is getting in; the technical test is difficult. The freedom afforded to hires, though, is enviable.

Solutions Engineer Intern

May 2022 • Cambridge, MA

What I liked

They have a very well-structured intern program and they train really well, which allowed me to always feel confident in what I was being asked to do.

What I wish was different

I know some people dislike the company's old-school culture. It's a lot more corporate than tech (business casual, in-person required, etc), but I really don't mind.

Advice

Take advantage of internal networking opportunities! The intern lunches are a great way to make your face known and get to know the company.

Software Development Intern

May - August 2018 • Cambridge, MA

What I liked

I was in the Database Platforms division, so I spent the summer developing an application that leverages their technologies. This let me develop skills in technologies that I wanted to work with, as well as have a key role in a complete project.

Product Support Intern

What I liked

It was a really good experience for people with little to no coding experience as well as people with a bit more. The internship introduced to me a lot (~35) of other really cool students from top schools who I have kept in contact with since. They take special care in assigning you to your project and do a good job of matching you to a project that meets your wants and skill level. Being an intern there exposed me to what it's like to work at a software engineering company--submitting multiple code drafts, having people look over my code, writing test cases, etc. Like any full-time employee, I had weekly meetings where I discussed my progress and I brainstormed with full-time employees about how best to approach a problem. The only difference was that I had a mentor and a bit more guidance but I worked pretty independently until the end and up until now (I still work remotely for the company). At the end of the program, all of the interns presented their projects. Prior to this, the managers had us do several practice presentations where they gave a lot of constructive feedback. The program also include biweekly outings for interns and full-time employees to all get to know each other better. Definitely a great experience.

What I wish was different

The training could have been better. Some lessons were excellent and had well-planned out exercises while other days were really confusing and disorganized. This delayed my work as I spent a lot of time figuring out what I was even supposed to do and how.

Advice

Do it! Especially if you're an underclassman as it's good exposure to the field and requires little prior knowledge as they use a proprietary coding language and provide the training you need. Go in with an open mind and learn as much as you can, especially during training. Everyone is really kind and willing to help you so reach out to your fellow interns as well as the full-time employees.
