Inter-American Foundation

External & Government Affairs Intern

May - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

The IAF was very intentional about making my internship experience beneficial for me. The staff allowed me to listen in and even contribute to many meetings in the department I was in as well as other departments of the organization. I was given both large and small projects based on my interests as well as areas for me to grow and learn.

Intern with the Office of Networks and Strategic Initiatives

October - December 2017 • Washington, DC

What I liked

It was great to have had the chance to learn more about the development field, the grant making process and all the issues being addressed by them. I was able to learn more about IAF's work, but also to learn about lots of other organizations performing similar jobs throughout Latin America and the world - while keeping an eye on their job opportunities!

What I wish was different

Initially I felt slightly lost and could not connect the meaning of my work as an intern with the overall goal of the organization. However, the tasks improved a lot, I was able to get more involved with the topics and materials, and that's when I began to notice how my efforts could still be utilized by my colleagues once I left. Also, communication with some (not all) managers was often frustrating since there would be no response to your emails asking for guidance and feedback.

Advice

Keep a diary of your tasks: write down everything you do, and hours worked no matter where you intern\work. It'll help you keep track of your experience, what you should do again or not. Also, be upfront with your supervisors: email them with questions, suggestions, informing them of completed tasks, etc.
