Intelligentsia Coffee

Production Crew

June 2020 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

ideal hours, good perks (lots of free coffee and tea), lots of cool people, easy work, good money, time and a half for overtime, learned a lot about the coffee industry

What I wish was different

The work is very repetitive, so it's easy to get familiar with the job and feel confident in yourself, but it can be a bit boring at times. I started working on the basis that weekend hours would be completely optional, and they have become mandatory for the weekends that are needed. If you can't manage that, you can get out of it now and then, though. There are some fluctuating busy and slow seasons that cause hours to fluctuate a bit. In the summer, the building is very hot, and somewhat cold now that winter is approaching. It is also pretty loud, so yelling is sometimes necessary, and because it's hard to hear, social distancing is difficult. Otherwise, Intelli has done a great job of being COVID safe.

Advice

It's a good job but is quite physical, some days you'll be on your feet for the whole day, so it's important to be mindful of your health and body if you are considering this job. Transitioning into the shift and physical aspects takes a few weeks, but once you are adjusted, it is a nice way to stay active.
