Institute of Contemporary Art/ Boston (ICA)

Curatorial Intern

June - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I really enjoyed getting to work with the curatorial department. I got to experience so many different types of museum work. I saw the various parts of an exhibition come to life - from creating exhibition image boards, to editing exhibition books, to the actual installation of a show. Everyone at the ICA/Boston is so welcoming and open to interns wanting to learn more about museum work.

What I wish was different

My nine-week internship went by so quickly, so by the time I felt completely integrated into the museum, I was about to leave. I wish some of my work had been more tangible, but what I did end up doing greatly helped with the organization of the department.

Advice

Know what you want to get out of your experience interning here. There are so many different paths you can explore within even just the curatorial department. My supervisor was very open to me exploring work that I wanted to practice - so take advantage of that!

Art Lab Intern

June 2018 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I enjoyed getting an understanding of the education department within a big art institution. I enjoyed helping with projects and programming that corresponds to the Art Lab department of the ICA. Getting an overall sense of the long term planning and minute details that goes into these large scale productions for programing at a contemporary art museum. I enjoyed making connection with other interns and staff at the ICA.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more opportunity for the interns to initiate our own art education project/ program for visitors at the museum.

Advice

For others applying to this internship, I advise a genuine interest in working with people, flexibility and adaptability to new tasks, and comfortability working in a fast- pace environment.
