What I liked

Getting to experience graduate level research in a lab under a current graduate student and PI. I learned about coding, data collection, data analysis, presentations, writing a proposal, and writing an abstract.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have experienced it in person but it was done remotely because of COVID.

COVID 19 Testing and Lab

August 2020 • Bloomington, IN

What I liked

This summer and fall, I worked for Indiana University doing both their Welcome Week Testing, Anti-body Study, Flu Shot Clinics, and Mitigation Testing for the student body. As an Epidemiology Major, I loved feeling like I was helping keep our campus safe, while learning valuable skills that I will use throughout my career. I will be continuing this throughout the spring semester as well.

What I wish was different

Clearly the period we are in right now is far from ideal, I wish that I would have had these experiences while the world wasn't locked down. I think the idea of working in health care right now can be daunting but it was important for me to take advantage of the hands on experience I could access, while still being safe.

Advice

I would tell others to reach out to professors they find interesting about any opportunities they know of, sign up to receive emails from schools and companies that post job listings, and take advantage of the connections you make throughout your major because it will give you far more opportunities and you'll be able to figure out which parts of your major interest you the most.

Advice

It is super important to manage your time with planners and calendrers, because research on top of classes in a time that is already difficult can take a lot of motivation out of you. Managing events and tasks on paper or digitally makes it so that time does not get away from you so easily.

Student research

June - August 2018 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

I really enjoyed the freedom that comes with research. It was really interesting and a useful learning experience to be able to work on a project that a team and myself had full control over.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time. The program is limited since it is only in the summer, and we had to prepare a poster with our findings, so we were not able to run and create all the tests we would have liked to.

Advice

Research is a great experience. It is entirely unique, and no two experiences are the same. I would tell anyone pursuing a STEM degree to do some form of research, because it gives you a great way to apply what you learn in classes, in an area that you really care about before you have graduated.

Researcher

June - August 2018 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

As my first formal research experience, the Data Science REU was an opportunity where I was able to define the direction of my simulations and coding. I came up with my own methodology for approaching the research problem and, through trial and error, taught myself new technical concepts and good research practices.
