Nurse Intern in Community & Case Management

June - August 2017 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

If you are looking to see how nurses can function outside of the hospital, specifically in health insurance, this will give you insight! I had a lot of autonomy and was able to work on several interesting research projects. The group activities for all of the interns were both fun and taught me skills for future job searches and networking.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been a bit more cohesion for all of the nurse interns to get together during the work day! I was on a floor with only one other intern.

Advice

Health insurance reform is happening in the near future, don't miss this opportunity to get involved first hand.

Nurse Intern

June - August 2018 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

I loved that I was in the community instead of a typical nursing internship in a hospital. I was able to serve the most vulnerable populations in Philadelphia. The nursing internship through Independence Blue Cross required three leadership labs in Center City with the other interns. During those labs, my network dramatically increased by at least 200%. I will definitely be using the networks I made this summer in the future. The pay and schedule flexibility of my supervisor made it so that I made good money this summer while still having some free time.

What I wish was different

Since I was not in a hospital, I did not perform "typical" nursing skills such as head to toe assessments. While I was okay with this, it may not be for everyone.

Advice

Use internships to build a network. Everyone you meet understand the position you're in as a college student. The people I met were very willing to help me this past summer and in the future. Don't be afraid to speak up. Make yourself known!
